Aviary Graphics Clone

2009 February 8

I just learned about Aviary, and realize I’m becoming liberated from Adobe – slowly, but definitely, liberated.

Aviary is a creative suite, like Adobe’s, but it’s web based and mostly free. It’s not as feature filled as Photoshop (which I would never give up), but who uses most of those features, anyway?

To me, what’s really impressive is that it’s the first web based vector utility, and it clones Illustrator very well, right down to the pen tool. That particular app is called Raven and it’s part of their premium subscription, which is only $99. for a year. Illustrator costs $600. Photoshop $800. Adobe Suite costs $1,700. And so on.

Also, even though it’s web based it can live off-line via Adobe Air.

And finally, at the very least, whether you would replace Adobe with it or not, it’s great to know you have a graphics editing program available to you, from any hooked up computer, whenever you need.

I signed up and gave it a go, and it’s cool.
