Metropolis (1925)

2009 April 29

Germans are known as pioneers of silent film, and you can see why. Metropolis is beyond over-the-top, beyond cutting-edge. They spent the equivalent of 200 million on the film, and it’s obvious.

The special effects are better than so many films, made decades later. And the electronic soundtrack could have been released today.

Adjectives that come to mind: creepy, surreal, modern, cutting-edge, Art Deco, masterpiece.

Written and Directed by:  Fritz Lang
