Avoid A Facebook Smack Down

2010 February 13
by Michelle McCormack

I’m shocked by how many Facebook friend requests I’m getting lately from companies and brands!

People need to be aware that Facebook will shut down a profile the second they find out it’s not for an individual (Human).

And the crazy thing is, Fan Pages are way more powerful anyway.  They:

  • reach more people
  • are indexed by Google
  • place your brand in the proper context, thus avoiding confusion and making your promotional efforts way more efficient.

So unless you want to waste time building a network of tens, hundreds or even thousands of people, only to have Facebook whack it forever, then follow the rules and don’t create profile pages for non-human entities.

Use a Group or Fan Page.

To create a fan page you need a personal profile. If it's a business why would you attach the fan page to a person. What if the person leaves?

Facebook started as a personal social network and the business / fan page was a natural evolution from that. I would guess that in the very near future companies will be able to set up pages independent of individuals :)
