Copyright Criminals: a Documentary on Everyone’s Favorite Subject

2010 February 20
by Michelle McCormack

A look at the usually absurd state of copyright law as it pertains to the music industry, especially hip-hop.

‘we see music as an assemblage of sound, and you can’t copywrite a sound…’, ‘we was creating a collage’ – Public Enemy

‘… I haven’t got a penny for it…’ – Funky Drummer

‘… you’re either rich enough to afford the law, or you’re a complete outlaw’

—–

What about the evolution of everything, including sound? How do you copyright a beat?

I wish someone would create a new profession that was the opposite of Lawyer; like an antidote to Lawyer.  A profession where everyday you fight for fairness, a rational outcome and the betterment of humanity.
