I ♥ Google – But Need Some Space

2010 March 9

I love Google.  I love Google even more than Prada or Jay-Z.

WHAT I LOVE?
I love Google going mobile. They’re doing massive amounts of geo location research, which will translate into me being able to live seamlessly offline and online, more effectively.

And I love the cloud apps: Gmail, Google Docs, NOT Buzz, because they’ve freed me from the CPU sucking burden that is Microsoft Office.

And I love Google attempting to provide the human race with 1 gig up.  True data liberation that should be granted to all men and women, not just those with money.

I could go on, but I hate long blog posts.  Most people know how ubiquitous Google is, and how smart.  They’re real thinkers who care about what I care about.  Most of them are around my age, I guess, or younger, and living everyday to innovate and liberate.

WHAT ABOUT IN 20 YEARS?
Most of us have been in relationships that start out great and end badly.  We see only the good stuff, but somewhere along the line the other person changes.  Or maybe we do. Either way, we want out and hopefully in the time between we didn’t give up too much of our personal power.

Couldn’t this happen with Google?  Mightn’t they change, or us, and we want out?

At some point there will be a full employee turnover, has to be – people die or retire and are replaced.  What if these new people have different ideas about privacy? What if they have less respect for the data we’ve so freely given Google?

Also, if Google is embedded in all of our media, won’t they have a little too much control of how we think, feel and act?

I’m not saying I want Google stop.  I am saying that the ‘do no evil’ slogan might not be the slogan in 20 years, at least not in practice, and that we should start talking about the ramifications if/when that happens:

LET’S START A CONVERSATION (add your own questions in the comments)

  • Do we want a private company to have as much or more power than the government?
  • How can we create boundaries without slowing innovation?

RCRD LBL Lets You – No Makes You – Discover Amazing Music

2010 March 7
by Michelle McCormack

HOW DO I DISCOVER NEW MUSIC?
It’s getting trickier by the day to discover new music. I don’t know about you, but radio has gone the way of paper for me – an old school medium that stresses me out, and that I just don’t want to deal with anymore.

RCRD LBL website, though, has been an amazing discovery tool for me.  They send out at least 2 free mp3s daily within their newsletter.   Often the track is from an established artist just trying to promote a new album, and is usually so good I’d pay if I had to.  But I don’t.

DISCOVER MUSIC WITHOUT A RADIO
I don’t really have time to check out music everyday, so  I’ve started a folder in Gmail titled ‘Music To Check Out’. Once every couple of weeks I kick back and listen to all the insane RCRD LBL newsletter music.
Then I:

  • connect w/ the artists on their MySpace page
  • download the free MP3s
  • organize them in iTunes
  • sych them to my iPhone.

DAMN RESTRICTIONS
One unfortunate thing is, it seems Lala does not sych my RCRD LBL music.  This is a bummer since I adore Lala music service, who let you mirror your iTunes library and have all your music in the cloud.

I’m holding out hope that the restriction gets lifted eventually.

Check out Midnight Rockers Express Side 2 for an example of the sick music RCRD LBL pushes.

Viral Video Genius

2010 March 2
by Michelle McCormack

Swedish agency Draftfcb came up with this viral concept as a way of convincing a young and metropolitan audience to start paying a broadcast fee as part of the Swedish public-service system.

Just upload a photo of yourself and you become the hero in this extremely well executed drama. It’s a trip!

And one of the smartest things Draftfcb did, was to make the final video dead easy to share and embed, which we all want to do, especially if we’re the main character!  ahhh… just love good social marketing.

Google Buzz Privacy Stunt

2010 February 24
by Michelle McCormack

Don’t you think the Google Buzz privacy situation was a good old fashioned publicity stunt?  How else could they get so many to talk about a service that’s almost impossible to use?

Over and over, all week, we’ve heard tech pundits say: “Google’s mistake was that they only tested internally”.

What?! Google doesn’t need a control group to realize the public would rather not have their contacts shared, publicly. That’s privacy 101; leaving me to believe the privacy breach was intentional.

I mean, honestly, if someone didn’t catch such a simple mistake, pre-roll-out, then they have some serious project management issues over there in Mountain View

Look, one month after Facebook’s privacy controversy, the social network hit 400,000,000 (yeah, that’s million) users, globally.

Google noticed and decided they needed a privacy controversy of their very own.  Perhaps the magic would rub off.

The difference is, though, people are already hooked on Facebook.  No one’s hooked on Google Buzz, and aren’t likely to be – at least not with their own free will.

And the question is, will forcing people to see the Buzz icon, every time the log into Gmail, get them to actually use the service?

Let me know what you think in the comments, below.
